Brendan Darr's Blog
I have an interesting perspective on this entire subject. First, at my other job (a radio station in DC) I got to hear callers talking about this subject all the time. Second, as I mentioned, I'm in DC and we have a ton of fans of Baltimore who listen to our station.
I also want to point out that I'm not attacking Ray Lewis' religious beliefs, we are all entitled to our own opinions on religion, but we are all also not entitled to hear about yours and when it is convenient for you. Most importantly, however, I am separating Ray Lewis the football player (first ballot hall of famer) and Ray Lewis the man (see below).
Okay let's get started, first and foremost, the religious talk that comes from Ray Lewis is enough to drive even some of the most religious people against him. A pastor even went as far to say that it was sacrilegious what he was saying.
"No weapon formed against me shall prosper" - Ray Lewis
This is a conversation we aren't having enough as a nation, and as a spiritual society. God doesn't care about the outcomes of sporting events. I know this to be a fact, and I know this because there are literally a million things more important in the universe than this. 26% of Americans, according to Sports Illustrated, believe that God has influence over their team. He doesn't. If he did, your favorite player getting hurt would be on you and your fellow fans for not being religious enough, rather than his knee buckling after taking a nasty hit.
Also, the use of religious quotes and text comes most when it comes to questions Ray Lewis doesn't want to answer.
“I tell [teammates] all the time: ‘Don’t let people from the outside ever try to disturb what’s inside.’ That’s the trick of the devil. The trick of the devil is to kill, steal and destroy. That’s what he comes to do. He comes to distract you from everything you’re trying to do.” - Ray Lewis on deer antler allegation.
We all know the greatest trick the devil ever played was to convince the world he didn't exist. In all seriousness, the way Lewis dismisses the question and reverts back to his religion is more of a crutch than anything at this point, and it is the perfect one, because in reality no one can question his religious beliefs. However, like I pointed out, I'm not questioning those, rather his motives to use them at opportune times. Basically, he insinuated that investigative journalism was a work of the devil, and played the victim here. It's a cheap cop out, but it's the perfect cheap cop out -- to that I have to give him credit.
We also know Ray Lewis has never met a camera he cannot cry, dance or exhibit the full spectrum of human emotions in front of. The crying and dancing shtick has gotten tired, but it is all his, and the people of Baltimore love him for that. However, I think we can all agree that a reasonable debate can be had here.
That's been the biggest problem I've noticed, it can't. Baltimore fans, especially when it comes from people in Washington, get extremely defensive. As if you can't say a negative word about Ray Lewis. Again, no one is questioning his talent on the field or what his leadership has meant to this franchise over the past 17 years. But let's be clear, Saturday Night Live doesn't just impersonate someone for nothing. They did it because he's become a caricature of himself.
That, I think, is the most important part of all this. He's become so over-the-top in recent years it is just too much for people, like myself, to handle. God forbid you bring up that fateful night in Atlanta. Or even mention the deer antlers, like Matt did here. To be fair, everyone I've talked to who has tried the deer antler extract has said it's a boost of male performance, in THAT way. Maybe it aides in recovery, or maybe it just cures stage fright, I don't know (but I might try and find out, stay tuned for that update).
This isn't about that night in Atlanta, although I do wonder what happened to the white suit like everyone else. This isn't about the deer antler extract, although that certainly isn't helping. It also isn't about his play on the field, although one could argue his stats are inflated by jumping on piles.
No, this is simply because Ray Lewis has become too much for me, and many others, to take.

@ 2kforlifekid- did you really just bring in our government and how it is a problem is completely stupid. That has nothing to do with this debate at all.
Also for the people getting on to this guy is stupid. This article isn't about how he hates how Ray Lewis is religious but how he is just sick of Ray Lewis is telling a stupid sob story to the world after every game which needs to stop.
And for people calling the author if this article "racist" completely has nothing else to come up with to say against this article.
I think what this article is trying to tell us is that Ray Lewis is a drama queen and needs to keep his tears and his thoughts on god to himself.

This article is ignorant and irresponsible.
Ray can believe what he wants to believe. He can act how he wants to act. He has every right to do those things. You come off as someone who doesn't do their research outside of a few stat searches on Google.
And can people drop the whole "Ray Lewis murdered someone" shtick? If you did a goddamn Google search, you can see he was sitting a criminal and obstructing justice, which is what he was convicted for. Nowhere in there does it imply murder. You sound like one of those people who still wanna see OJ hang even though he was acquitted.
People need to get over themselves. What the hell gives us the right to judge anyone else? You (and some of the commenters) are going on this self-righteous tirade about how Ray is selfish, and how his act is tiring. Stop. Let the man live.
As for the religious stuff... I'm surprised that OS let this article go up on the site on those grounds alone. What the hell?

We call him a murderer because he was wearing a white suit during the murder and the jacket to that suit was missing and supposedley dumped somewhere else. He also lied about what happened during the night and ratted out his friends and they only gave him that option because of his celebrity status.
Also you said that all he did was obstruction to justice which is an automatic jail sentence no matter what it is. So he somehow got out of that.

Stop, dude. I don't care. There are millions of kids in cities like Chicago or Compton who are murdered everyday, and their murderers are never caught, and their cases never solved. And THOSE are cases with CLEAR suspects.
So, speculating about whether or not Ray Lewis murdered someone is pointless, in the grand scheme of things. That, and I just don't care. Let's just play some football...

We must realize that sports are a business first, and although we don't want to acknowledge it owners are in the business to make money. the owners know that these guys are using to enhance performance and in some cases probably encourage it. Adrian Peterson comes back from an ACL injury and runs like a man gone wild and no one says anything. These guys are expected to perform at all cost and you never hear about the major players failing a test. Mark McGuire started off a small guy in baseball and before we knew it he looked like the Incredible Hulk. Barry bonds breaks a record and now we look down on him. Football is a gladiator sport and fans get excited over hard knockout hits. The game is brutal and to survive they have to take something. A guy 300 pounds running 4.4 speed hitting the average person can't handle that. I wouldn't be surprised if Peyton juicing!

It's really funny... you can tell who read the article and who didn't. I never attacked Lewis religion or God, I merely stated that we should have a debate about it, and the debate I was trying to start was completely ignored by some. If I wanted to mock his religion I would have said something at the end like "This isn't about Lewis' religion, but I do want to know what God's voice sounds like since they have conversations."
That's mocking him and his religion. That's not what I did.
As for @2kForLifeKid -- I'm literally speechless and have no witty retort. I'll eat those 7000 weewee's n die because you've won the internet. Bravo sir, bravo. You are the king snake and your genius is underestimated by those around you.

No, Brendan... we shouldn't have a debate about it. Now it this we're an article about him possibly using PED, then there would be a discussion. But, this article is about whether or not Lewis and his antics live up to your standards. In other words, this is you passing judgement.
Nothing more, nothing less. But a debate, this is not...

Weird, 31 other comments would disprove your theory that this isn't a debate, the fact people are on both sides of it would further disprove that. A debate rages, whether or not you want to have it. That's the point of what I was trying to say.
If you think it's ignorant or racist to quote and say factual statements about a person... well, I don't know what to tell you. The problem is with you, not me.

Good post. His religious beliefs turn on and off at the press of the REC button. My opinion of course, but he is the devil. And I recognize the fact that we as a society give so much time to a reprehensible glory-seeking opportunist says far more about us than Ray. And ... and ... I will wager that he attempts a comeback after he retires. He is not content to be out of the spotlight. And I will boycott any network that hires him for analysis.

I don't really have a problem with Ray, because he has always been over the top with what he does.
As far as his off the field issues...celebrities and political figures and prominent people in society get away with committing crimes from the petty to the most nefarious.
Lastly, being the last member of the inaugural Baltimore Ravens team, Ray is really like that old guy that says nonsense but you dont interrupt him you just respect him because of what he has done for the franchise... You know that person who makes jokes that arent funny but get laughs because of their clout?
Thats Ray
